The Medical Advisory Board for Unicity Network™ has issued a bulletin regarding
Women's Hormone Replacement Therapy.
URGENT COMMUNICATION
As part of our commitment to our Independent Business Owners, we will, from time to time,
issue important bulletins regarding breaking news stories as they relate to our products and
how they relate to public health. The recent discontinuation of the Women's Health Initiative
Hormone Replacement Trial, sponsored by the National Institute of Health (NIH), has
resulted in a flurry of comments by numerous IBOs regarding the implications of this action.
The Medical Advisory Board feels it is imperative that IBOs for the leading nutritional
company in our industry, with a commitment to Women's Health, be armed with accurate
information regarding the results of this trial and the current state of affairs regarding
hormone replacement.
The following is a compilation of facts, based on data from that study. Because we are
associated with Unicity Network™, many of our colleagues, friends, and families will expect
us to be repositories of accurate information. Please review the following and feel free to read
the article in it's entirety at the JAMA website
and past issues.
1.The arm of the study that was stopped involved the testing of Prempro (Premarin plus
Provera) in menopausal women with an intact uterus. The study lasted 5.2 years and
was stopped because the data demonstrated a clear-cut disadvantage in the Prempro
group versus the placebo group.
2.The data showed that there was an increased "hazard ratio" for the following:
a.Coronary artery disease 1.29:1 (29% increase)
b.Breast Cancer 1.26:1 (26% increase)
c.Stroke 1.41:1 (41% increase)
d.Pulmonary embolus (blood clot to the lung, a complication of deep vein
thrombosis) 2.13:1 (113% increase)
3.There was a decrease in the risk of hip fracture with HRT (34%), a decrease in the risk
of colorectal cancer (37%), and a decrease in the risk of endometrial (uterine) cancer
(17%).
4.These results may "under-estimate" the risk of HRT because a number of women
actually dropped out of the study due to intolerable side effects of Estrogen/Provera
replacement. Had they continued, the number of women with serious complications
may have been higher.
5.The study could not tell whether it was the Estrogen or the Progestin that caused the
increased risks. It is impossible to recommend one versus the other on the basis of
these data.
6.No drug company has withdrawn any of their HRT products from the market at this
time.
7.These kinds of data usually result in drug companies issuing a "warning" regarding the
use of their drugs. However, at this time, no warning has been issued by any company
manufacturing or distributing HRT products.
8.The arm of the study in women who have had a hysterectomy is still being continued
and is due to be analyzed in 2005. No untoward effects have been noted in this group.
9.There is a heightened interest in the use of "Alternative" products, including
Phytoestrogens (Meno essentials, wild yam, red-clover) and other herbal compounds
(Black Cohosh) that are reported to have beneficial effects regarding osteoporosis,
protection from coronary artery disease, a slight decrease in the incidence of breast
cancer, and a decrease in symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes,
depression and anxiety.
10.Unicity Network™ markets standardized products containing safe isoflavones
(Meno·Essentials™) and natural progesterone (Wild Yam Cream) as opposed to the
synthetic progesterone and mares' urine used in Prempro. IBO's should be aware that
BoneMate™ provides not only the most bio-available form of calcium (calcium citrate
malate), along with magnesium, but also soy ipriflavones to assist in the proper bone
utilization of calcium and magnesium.
